![]() The last reason that we think the A70 is an underrated JDM legend is that it played a significant role in changing Toyota’s image in the minds of an entire generation of car enthusiasts. But as a rival to the FC RX-7, MR2, 280ZX, and S13 Silvia, the A70 Supra offered more of a grand touring flavor, making it a great choice for road trips. There’s no way it will be faster than the current Supra in a quarter-mile race or on a racetrack. Nevertheless, you can still pick one in good condition for around $10,000 to $15,000. Today, since the A80 Supra’s popularity has gone through the roof thanks to pop culture, Supra enthusiasts are settling down for the A70 instead. ![]() It drove like no other Toyota, and could be modified to make serious power. The A70 has a 5-inch longer wheelbase than the current Supra, yet its handling was precise and generated confidence in the driver while maneuvering fast curvy roads. The 207 hp power figure may seem uninspiring, but it reduced the 0-60 time to under 7 seconds. Toyota wanted to get around the strict displacement regulation in Japan, so they came up with the 2.0-liter parallel twin-turbo engine, and boy the people were glad to have it. Actually, if we were to test drive it in this day and age, we would say that the A70 was more like a grand tourer than a sports coupe. People who chose to have it enjoyed a silky-smooth ride along with respectable handling. Like the Targa roof, TEMS was also the right decision from Toyota and a popular choice among customers. The 3rd-Gen Supra was somewhat of a technology showcase from Toyota and included stuff like an electronically-controlled suspension system called TEMS as an option. ![]() Remember, this was in the ‘80s, and at that time, anything under 8 seconds was decently fast for an affordable sports car. ![]() Toyota’s 3.0-liter straight-six engine makes 200 horses that breathe naturally and propel the car to 60 mph in just over 7 seconds. But the A70 will appeal to both NA and forced induction fans because it came in both versions. There are many who prefer a naturally aspirated engine to one with forced induction as a result. But it doesn’t come with flaws, turbo lag being one of them. Turbochargers are among the most popular and successful ways to add more power to an engine. ![]()
